The Columbia Storm lost in the semi-finals and finished third at the Columbia 15 Invitational on March 7, 2010 at the Volleyball House.
DVA won a spirited semi-final match 25-22 and 25-21 on their way to claiming the title. The Storm rallied from an early 8-0 deficit to pull within 15-14 behind the defensive play of Amanda Kupiec and Maddie Chervenak. Both recorded four digs in the set. Anna Bella Sicilia paced the offense with two kills in the first set. The set went back and forth with DVA prevailing 25-22. The second set saw the Storm jump out to a 10-4 lead. However, DVA’s fine defensive play kept the Storm at bay and DVA prevailed 25-21.
The tournament began with the Storm beating Delaware Juniors Infinity in straight sets by the scores of 25-14 and 25-15. Allison Kupiec led a 6-0 run to give the Storm a 14-8 lead in the first set. She recorded three aces in the run and Sicilia added one kill. Tish Carmona continued the strong serving with two aces own her own, extending the Storm’s lead to 18-9 and the Storm were never threatened in the 25-14 win. The Storm got their offense going in the second set. Rebecca Pierce recorded three kills and Jordon Lawson recorded two more in the win. Chelsea Owensby set up the offense with four assists.
The Storm defeated NOVA Phoenix 25-21 and 25-13 to run their pool play record to 2-0. Lexi White-Torruellas played an all around fine first set recording one kill, two aces and four assists. Pierce (3 kills) and Lawson (2 kills) paced the offense while Allison Kupiec (3 digs), Chervenak (3 digs) and Carmona (2 digs) led the defense. Strong serving led the Storm to an easy 25-13 win in the second set. White-Torruellas’ 6-0 service run (2 aces) gave the Storm a 10-5 lead and Allison Kupiec’s 9-0 service run (4 aces) extended the lead to 20-6. Lawson and Sicilia provided the offense with two and one kills respectively.
The Storm ran their record to 3-0 win a 25-14 and 25-7 win over Time Out 15 Red. Owensby highlighted the second set win with seven aces. The victory clinched first place in Pool A and put the Storm in the semi-finals.
