Storm placed 3rd in the Silver Bracket and 7th overall in the Monument City Classic at the Richmond Convention Center the weekend of January 15-18, 2010. The three-day tournament had 32 teams in the 15-year old club division. Read the full story in the Howard County Times.
The Storm captured third place in the Silver Bracket with a 25-13 and 25-14 win over Triangle 15 White. Jordan Lawson paced the offense in the first set with three kills. Allison Kupiec provided a 4-0 service run which included two aces to provide the Storm with an early 13-6 advantage. Strong offensive and defensive play won the second set and secured the victory. Anna Bella Sicilia (2 kills), Sarah Przybyla (2 kills), and Chelsea Owensby (7 assists) led the offense. Maddie Chervenak led the back row with four digs.
Earlier, the Storm fell to the Jammers 15s Blue Team 17-25, 25-17, 11-15. Owensby led the way in the second set win with four assists. Allison Kupiec led the offense with two kills and two aces and Lexi White-Torruellas added two digs.
The first day of the three day tournament saw the Storm win their pool with a 3-0 record. The day began with a 25-14 and 25-18 win over NVR. Allison Kupiec led the way in the first set leading a 12-0 service run. Jordan Lawson recorded one (1) kill and three (3) blocks and Rebecca Pierce chipped in one (1) kill and two (2) assists. The second set was a strong defensive effort by the Storm. Lawson added two more blocks while Chervenak and Allison Kupiec provided strong play along the back row. Tish Camona (2 aces) provided a 5-0 service run early in the game and NVR never threatened the outcome. The offense was paced by the setting of Owensby and White-Torruellas who both recorded three (3) assists.
The Storm overwhelmed TCA with their strong serving in a 25-6 and 25-6 victory. Owensby put the set away early with a 14-0 service run which included seven (7) aces. Allison Kupiec added two (2) kills and two (2) aces in the win. White-Torruellas started the second set with a 7-0 service run. Allison Kupiec added a 6-0 run of her own to stake the Storm to a 14-1 lead. Amanda Kupiec led the fine defensive effort and threw in two (2) aces of her own.
The first day concluded with a hard fought 25-20 and 25-22 Triangle 15 White. Every player did their part in the first set. With the scored tied at 16, Camona led a 6-0 run that provided the final margin of victory. Chervenak led the defensive play with two (2) digs and several fine passes. The front row play of Lawson (3 kills), Przybyla (1 block) and Anna Bella Sicilia (1 kill) kept Triangle in check. Amanda Kupiec led the comeback from an 11-6 deficit with a 6-0 service run. With the score tied at 22, Camona led a set clinching 3-0 service run supported by Przybyla’s block and her set clinching ace.
The Storm started quickly in two day of the event with a 25-15 and 25-19 win over SC Juniors White. Przybyla (3 kills) and Allison Kupiec (5 kills) paced the offense in the first set. Amanda Kupiec’s 7-0 service run broke open a close set and provided the Storm with a 21-12 lead. Chervenak lead the defense with several fine passes and two digs. The second set was a solid team effort with Pierce (2 kills) and Allison Kupiec (2 kills and 2 aces) led the offense attack. White-Torruellas had four assists in the win.
The Storm ran their win streak to five with a 25-17 and 25-21 win over DVA. The first set saw the defensive play of Lawson (2 blocks) and Chervenak (6 digs) lead the way. White-Torruellas (6 assists) distributed the ball around equally and Chervenak led the offensive from the back row with two kills. The second set was also a display of fine defense. Lawson had four blocks and Camona passed well and recorded one dig.
East Carolina Junior Volleyball Club (ECJVB) ended the win streak and then ended the Storm’s championship dream with a hard fought three set win and then a 25-22 defeat in the one set tie-breaker. ECJVB defeated the Storm 25-13, 25-27, 15-7 in the final match of the second day. The Storm rallied from a 23-18 deficit to take the second set 27-25. Pierce (3 kills) and Amanda Kupiec (3 digs) led the comeback victory. The victory by ECJVB forged a three-way tie and forced a tie-breaker. After defeating DVA, East Carolina Volleyball Club defeated the Storm 25-22. Przybyla (3 kills and 1 block) and Jordan (3 blocks) put in strong performances in defeat. The Storm finished second in their pool earning them a spot in the Silver Bracket on the tournament’s final day.
