On March 15, 2009, the CVC Condors traveled to Baltimore, Maryland to participate in the Wild Blue 13/14 Invitational. The Condors reached the semi-finals of the tournament before falling to the Brandywine Bam 25-18 and 25-13.
The Condors split their first two games against MVSA Kaboom taking the first game 25-22 and dropping the second game 25-16. The Condors started quickly jumping out to a 6-0 lead in the first game behind the serving of Lexi White-Tourruellas (4 aces). The hitting of Allison Kupiec (2 kills) led the attack as the Condors expanded their lead to 17-10. MVSA rallied and cut the lead to 21-20 before a kill by Jordan Lawson restored order. The game featured fine defense and passing on both sides. Chelsea Owensby distributed the ball effectively recording six (6) assists. Taylor Latimer, Sarah Przybyla, Becca Pierce and Alli Cable all recorded kills. Cable’s winner secured the 25-22 victory. MVSA jumped out to a 9-4 lead in game two and quickly expanded it to 16-8. The Condors never threatened the lead and fell 25-16. The loss evened their record in pool play at 1-1.
The Condors took two games from MAVBC South Red by the scores of 25-10 and 25-9 to run their pool record to 3-1. Strong serving by the Condors was the difference in both games. In the first game, Kupiec (3 aces) led a 5-0 run to break open a close game and stake the Condors to a 13-4 lead. Pierce (3 aces), Maddie Chervenak (2 aces) and Przybyla (2 kills) also had fine games. Kupiec provided the early lead again in game two with a 6-0 service run with every point being recorded as a result of a service ace. Kupiec added two (2) kills and Owensby added three (3) assists as the Condors expanded their lead to 16-9. Owensby (6 aces) finished the game with an 8-0 service run. The Condors received solid defensive play from Mallory Baldwin and Naomi Burke. Burke also contributed one (1) kill in the 25-9 win.
The Condors overpowered Alexandria Volleyball 13’s taking both games by the identical score of 25-8. Chervenak set the pace in the first game with a 9-0 service run that included six (6) aces. Burke followed with a 5-0 service run of her own to stake the Condors to a 16-2 lead. Pierce, Przybyla, White-Tourruellas, Cable and Burke all recorded kills in the victory. Baldwin provided the Condors with a 10-3 lead in the second game with a 7-0 service run that included three (3) aces. Burke set the offense with three (3) assists. Przybyla (3 aces) finished off the game with a service run of 8-0. The pair of victories raised the Condors record to 5-1.
NVVA Select 13 Third Degree provided the competition for the final pair of games in pool play. The first game was a see-saw affair with the Condors leading 21-16 before the Third Degree rallied to tie the game at 22. At 24-24, Pierce put away a winner assisted by Owensby for the 25-24 lead. The Condors earned the next point for the 26-24 win. The game saw fine defensive play by Cable and Chervenak and solid offense from Kupiec (3 kills) and White-Tourruellas (2 kills). Game two was a classic with Condors winning 29-27. The Condors broke open a 7-7 tie behind a 4-0 service run from Chervenak (2 aces) for an 11-7 lead. The Third Degree answered with an 8-1 run to take a 16-12 lead. Trailing 24-21, the Condors rallied behind Przybyla. The middle hitter’s kill pulled the Condors within 24-22 and her 3-0 service run put them ahead 25-24. With the game tied at 27, CVC won the next two points for the dramatic 29-27 win. The Condors finished pool play with a 7-1 record and advanced to the quarterfinals to face the CVCVC Storm.
The Condors defeated the Chantilly VA Storm 25-19 and 25-22 in the quarterfinals to advance to the semi-finals. In the first game, the Condors broke open a close game with a 6-0 service run from Chervenak for a 21-14 lead. During the run Przybyla had two kills and Chervenak tossed in two aces. Kupiec finished the game with a service ace and a 25-19 victory. The offense was paced Owensby (6 assists) and finished by White-Tourruellas (3 kills) and Latimer (2 kills). The second game was a back and forth affair with the Condors winning 25-22. The Condors received fine defensive play from Cable and offensive contribution from Latimer and Przybyla who both recorded 2 kills.
