Condors Win Gold – Twice

The Columbia Condors, the Columbia Volleyball Club’s 14A team coached by Mike Bossom and Ophelia Tindell, won the gold medal in each of their first two tournaments of the season.

On January 14, in the Columbia 13-14s Invitational tournament at the Volleyball House in Elkridge, the Condors beat CCVC Stars (25-16, 25-17) in the finals match, after a day of undefeated play. Consistent serving, particularly from Jackie Hawkins (24 aces), Casey Schmidt (16 aces), and Ashley Fan and Kate Calvert (12 aces each), was key to their success.  Rebecca West led the team with 21 kills, with Samantha Brostrom contributing 16 and Julie Poston 15. Libero Jamie Frank’s outstanding passing, Laura Simpler’s key hitting (9 kills), and Erin Rice’s clutch assists rounded out the Condor’s success.

On January 8, in the Columbia 14s Invitational, the Condors beat the NVVA Select 14s (25-22, 25-13) in a tough championship match.  Highlights included Fan serving 14 straight points to win the first game against Cecil County (25-4), five blocks by Poston, 27 assists from Hawkins, and 19 kills by West.

The Condors, Columbia Volleyball Club's 14s national team, matched up against older teams at the Columbia President's Fest 15/16s on February 18 and 19. Twenty teams from Maryland, Virginia, and Delaware participated. The Condors took home the gold medal in the bronze division, beating the Carroll Vipers 16s (25-22, 25-11) in the semi-finals and the Diamond Junior 16s (25-11, 25-14) in the finals.

Highlights: Strong offensive and defensive play by Becky West (26 kills, 60 digs), Laura Simpler (21 kills, 14 digs), Julie Poston (18 kills, 40 digs), Jackie Hawkins (18 kills, 40 digs); accurate serving (88% for the team), particularly from Hawkins (24 aces), Poston (9 aces),  Ashley Fan (7 aces) and Casey Schmidt (41 of 45 serves in); and excellent team play from Samantha Brostrom (14 kills, 5 aces), Jamie Frank (30 digs), Erin Rice (7 kills), and Kate Calvert (2 blocks).

The Condors travel to Denver, Colorado next month to compete in the Crossroads National Qualifier. Good Luck Condors!
