| On January 28th, the mighty Cardinals finished in 3rd place
in their pool at the SMJ tourney. It was a great facility and the weather
was nice but the competition was stiff. On February 12th Mother Nature won
in straight sets with a snowstorm that cancelled the tournament. February
25th will forever be referred to as “Medal Day”. The Cardinals advanced to
the Silver Division playoffs at the MVSA Invitational in Frederick and won
their first playoff match ever against NVVA Fairfax. The Cardinals ran into
a tough competitor and lost the final match to Carroll County. They earned
the Silver Medal and now they want more. Back at home in the Volleyball
House on March 14th the Cardinals had an interesting day. One team from
their pool had to drop out so the match play became complicated. The
Cardinals had to win a tie breaker, but they advanced to the playoff round.
This led to the first ever meeting between Cardinals and Condors in the
“Columbia Conflict”. The 14As won, but the first game was frightening for
the Condors. They used a timeout as the Cardinals cut the lead to 17-15. An
exciting day ended with confidence and the vow that the Mighty Cardinals
would meet those Condors again. |
| The Cardinals were one of 6 teams from the CHRVA region
that rounded out the 47 teams that participated in the Northeast Qualifier
in the 14-Club division held over the three days at the Baltimore Convention
Center. Teams from 10 states were entered in the division and came from as
far away as Texas and Arizona in an attempt to qualify for a spot in the US
Nationals. Even though this is the Cardinals first season playing together,
to miss a tournament of this caliber in their own backyard would have been a
crime, so they entered the mix of some of the best teams in the country in
an effort to test themselves as a developing team.
No one said the competition would be a breeze and that proved to be the
case - however, short of the medal, one of the highlights of the weekend was
their win on the first day against a highly ranked team from North Carolina
that went on to take 10th place overall in the tournament! Things really
came to a head when they entered the third and final day and played their
best to snatch the tie-breaker in the playoff round from a challenger from
New York. That lead them to the medal round to take on a team from
Pennsylvania that ultimately resulted in their Silver Medal finish.
Win or lose, this was intended to be a chance to see some new faces,
share some great moments and enjoy the camaraderie that comes from an
experience like this. It's safe to say the Cardinals did all of that and
more. Congratulations to coaches Rob Moy and Olivia Kelly and the whole
Cardinals team for a job well done! |
